Program 2015

While the majority of the program is held in Finnish, but there are tens of different tracks of program ongoing simultaneously. For lectures and workshops only, there are at at least seven program items running simultaneously. The chances that you’ll be left with nothing to do due to lack of proficiency in Finnish are very slim.

The program items that are either in English or you can participate in without speaking Finnish (such as card- or board game tournaments, LARPs in both Finnish/Swedish and English, and so on) are listed below in chronological order based on the starting time. The Finnish name of the program item, if different from the English name, is listed in brackets after the English name. You can also view the full program here or download the program leaflet in Finnish from this page. Quick links below:

The computer kept drawing red and blue lines, depicting the masses of swirling gas. Symbols surrounding the storm map constantly updated on its components. The orb signifying Ganymede was strolling through adjacent screen. The pointers in cockpit were trembling slightly, as if in shallow, nervous sleep, but it only meant that everything was as it should be. After all, what could go wrong – surely nothing about the blinding crimson bolts slashing through the storm greater in diameter than Earth itself? Speaking of Earth, it had disappeared from radars long ago and this was more disturbing than the Maelstrom yawning below. ”Maelstrom” is a game about isolation and responsibility in the face of dangers known and unknown. The characters have to come to terms with their reasons for joining the space mission to Ganymede and look at their life on Earth from (literal) perspective, as well as make decisions about the mission’s future development and shape.

Game: Sat 15.00 – Sat 20.00, Otakaari 20 Iso puoli
Organizer: Ela Glowacka, Kari Lukasik
Samogitia, vast russet wasteland strewn with settlers’ debris and abandoned tech. If anything here had some worth, it has been scraped long ago by thieves or by Them. But in the eyes of people still inhabiting this land, old borders haven’t lost their importance, and crossing them is just a new form of sacrilege. The last such crime has been committed years ago, but it hasn’t been revenged. The echoes of previous ruler, dispersed in the Net, are still calling for retribution – and they don’t care whether the spilled blood will belong to people or to Them. The game’s main themes are identity and conflict – and particularly, identity that arises through conflict, by othering another group. The game’s focus is on acting and interactions between characters. The game calls for improvising a setting (all we give the players is the idea of a generic posthuman wasteland with rabid AIs and some unnamed invaders named Others), and it also introduces a novel mechanic of imperatives (each character has a secret she or he is not sure to reveal; the reveal is triggered by a certain event that might happen during the game).
